rent or buy a violin? where?
The first thing you should consider when investing in a violin is the quality. Low quality violins tend to sound harsh or make no sound at all, thus, discouraging the player of that instrument. That being said, you do not need to spend too much money on a decent student violin. Renting or buying is a matter of preference.
To ensure you are getting a decent violin at a fair price, I recommend you visit local violin shops in Manhattan. Taking your child on a “trip to the violin shop” can become an enjoyable, inspiring afternoon. If you would prefer to shop online, please visit Shar Music - www.sharmusic.com, or www.johnsonstring.com. These online options are safe and reliable.
If you decide to go with the online option, please make sure you choose the “violin outfit” option. This option would include the violin itself, the violin bow, violin rosin, and the violin case.
Acoustic Piano Or Keyboard?
Pianos come in various models of Grand Pianos and Upright. With space being a concern in NYC apartments, a keyboard is a perfect option for the young pianist. Some possible keyboard options are those by Rolland and Yamaha. You can purchase your keyboard online or at local retail stores such as Sam Ash or The Guitar Center.
Aside from a violin, bow, and case, what other basic materials or books for beginners need to be purchased?
Poly - Pad shoulder rest. Order according to the size of your violin. Cost: Approx. 8$
Music Stand. Cost: Approx. $12 - $40
Violin Repertoire Books $10 - $20
These materials can be found on www.sharmusic.com or johnsonstrings.com
Do you offer group lessons?
Group classes are structured to complement the existing music education of current students. Alternatively, Short-term violin workshops - click here - may be an option.
Is it possible to start Music lessons at age 3 or 4?
Absolutely! The parent plays a crucial role when the student is in this very precious age. Involvement, encouragement, and partnering with the teacher is needed to create a positive lesson experience in the studio and a positive practicing experience at home.

First Trial Lessons: What to expect
The trial lesson is a time that the Parent, Student and Teacher can meet each other to discuss expectations and learn about learning and teaching styles.
If your student has had lessons before, please bring all music materials and books that have been previously used.
When you arrive at the studio, walk down the steps and knock on the BOTTOM red door. The teacher will welcome you into the studio at your lesson time. Please remove your shoes upon entering the studio. The student must wash his hands in the sink, in the bathroom, before the lesson starts.
The fee for the trial lesson is $40, and must be paid before the start of the class to confirm the trial class.
